coming from a Viennese family of musicians, Kurt Rapf studied at the University of Music in Vienna where he graduated in conducting, organ, piano, harpsichord and composition.
The exceptional versatility of this artist could already be seen in his early youth. Shortly after the end of World War II he founded the 'Collegium Musicum Vienna' and served as a conductor of this chamber orchestra until 1956 touring Europe and overseas countries with great success. About the same time he started his international career as conductor, as soloist and as accompanist. He was appointed to Zurich Opera. Vienna offered him a professorship at the State Academy of Music, famous singers and soloists asked him to be their accompanist. His organ recitals placed him in the first rank of international organists.
1953-1960 Music Director of the City of Innsbruck. Since 1960 intensive broadcast and television activities, many tours in Europe, Near and Far East, the USA and South America, as well as appearances at many festivals brought him international acclaim.
1970-1987 he was appointed Chief of the Music Department of the City of Vienna, elected as President of the Austrian Composer's Society (until 1983) and honoured with the title 'professor'.
In 1986 he founded a new chamber orchestra, the 'Wiener Sinfonietta', with which he toured most European countries, the Middle East and Japan.
Kurt Rapf is also a very successful composer. He wrote more than 180 works: oratorios,symphonies, concertos for different instruments, 2 operas, chamber music and lieder. He got commissions from the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), from the Vienna Konzerthaus and various orchestras, soloists and ensembles.
Kurt Rapf realizes with great elan music of the classic and he also takes care of his own works in special performances.
